Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is a subtle approach to osteopathy that is very gentle and is generally appropriate for all ages. It can be particularly helpful for babies, children, women during pregnancy and the elderly. Cranial osteopaths assess for subtle changes of tension and tissue quality to diagnose areas of strain or

dysfunction. As with all approaches to osteopathy, cranial osteopathy aims to encourage the body’s own natural healing mechanisms. The term cranial is used because the method is particularly appropriate for treatment of the head, jaw and face. However, a cranial osteopath examines, and may treat, your whole body, not just your head.

Cranial osteopathy for babies and children Cranial techniques are safe, gentle, and non-manipulative. They are often used when treating young children and new born infants. Osteopaths are trained to screen for medical conditions and will tell you if you need to see another health professional such as your

doctor, midwife or health visitor.

Osteopaths work under the principle that there may be a number of contributing factors to the symptoms and will therefore evaluate not only the area which is producing the symptoms, but also associated areas that may be contributing to the issue including past trauma, environmental factors and the family’s health history.

What does cranial treatment feel like?

During treatment some people are aware of different sensations, such as mild or strong tension that gradually disappears, or a feeling of relaxation. Other people are unaware of anything happening during the treatment but notice that they feel very different post treatment.

How Nick works The first consultation lasts for up to one hour where a full case history is taken, followed by a thorough postural and movement evaluation. Once a diagnosis is reached, Nick will discuss with you the most appropriate options relating to your care (or that of your child). If osteopathic treatment is felt to be appropriate, with your consent, a wide range of gentle manual techniques may be used.

Treatment is tailored specifically for the individual and advice is given about how you can best help yourself (or your child) to improve the problem and alleviate symptoms. Stretching, strengthening or mobility exercises may be prescribed, as well as advice on posture, diet, ergonomics and lifestyle.

Patients may be referred by their GP or can make an appointment with Nick independently without referral, by calling the clinic.
