Cranial osteopathy for babies and children

Cranial osteopathy is a subtle approach to osteopathy that is very gentle, safe and non-manipulative. It is generally appropriate for all ages and can be particularly helpful for babies and children.

Cranial osteopaths assess for subtle changes of tension, strain and dysfunction, and as with all approaches to osteopathy, cranial osteopathy aims to encourage the body’s own natural healing mechanisms.

The term cranial is used because this method is particularly appropriate for treatment of the head, jaw and face. However, a cranial osteopath examines, and may treat, the whole body, not just the head.

Osteopaths are trained to screen for medical conditions and will advise if you need to see another health professional such as your doctor, midwife or health visitor.

How Nick works

The first consultation lasts for up to one hour where a full case history is taken, followed by a thorough examination. Once a diagnosis is reached, Nick will discuss with you the most appropriate options relating to the care of your child. If osteopathic treatment is considered appropriate, with your consent, a wide range of gentle manual techniques may be used. These may include gentle stretching, massage and cranial osteopathy. These gentle techniques can encourage deep relaxation and calming and increase wellbeing in babies and children.

Treatment is tailored specifically for the individual child and advice is provided to the parent about how they may help their child to further alleviate symptoms. For example, home massage techniques may be prescribed, as well as advice on sleep, posture and nutrition. Mums can also benefit from osteopathy during and after pregnancy to help settle the trauma to the pelvis.

Babies and children may be referred by their GP or parents can make an appointment for their child with Nick independently without referral, by calling the clinic.
